My dissertation is full of in-depth quantitative information characterizing the top 10 language editions of Wikipedia, as of December 2007. Thus, if you really want to get the complete picture, I am sorry but you will have to be patient, grab several cups of coffe (highly recommended), and read it from cover to cover.

Despite that, if you really want to get just a first glimpse of the most important conclusions presented in the document, they can be summarized as follows:

  • From 2007, the evolution of several key descriptive parameters characterizing the top 10 Wikipedias has entered a steady-state phase, breaking the previous growing rates (exponential slopes).
  • Some language versions (like English, German, French or Spanish) exhibit quite active patterns regarding editors activity and debate (discussion pages, user pages...). On the contrary, other language versions (like Polish or Dutch) present a strong influence of automated content generation (by so-called bots).
  • All Wikipedias present highly unequal distribution of effort among editors. Broadly speaking, in all cases around 10% of editors performed approximately 90% of the total number of edits (looking at the whole activity history). There is also a higher limit in the total effort that a single editor can develop in the project.
  • The median lifetime of editors in the top 10 Wikipedias is less than 6 months, meaning that at least 50% of editors abandon the project before that period. Additionally, the analysis of editing history of individual editors shows that a growing number of editors is disconnecting from the project (though we can never say for sure that they will not come back again, at any time in the future).
  • Unsually, for a project fueled by spontaneous contributions from volunteers, since 2004 all top 10 Wikipedias shows almost exact patterns regarding the inequality of monthly number of edits. In simple words, every month since 2004, the same percentage of editors (around 15%-20% of monthly active editors) is making the same number of edits (around 80%-85% of monthly edits).
